1. What is coaching?

The International Coach Federation defines coaching as "an ongoing professional relationship that helps people produce extraordinary results in their lives, careers, businesses; or organizations. Through the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance and enhance their quality of life."

Dave Buck, master coach and CEO of CoachVille, defines a coach as "a knowledgeable independent observer who gives feedback, teaches skills, expands awareness and provides any support needed to improve performance."

As a coaching client, you drive the agenda and decide what you want to accomplish. As the coach, I contribute my skills and knowledge to help you get where you want to go. Coaching provides a framework for positive action and lasting change. I know that you are creative and resourceful, and possess your own wisdom. I treat you as a whole person, honoring your professional and personal sides. The environment I create is completely confidential, 100% supportive, and non-judgmental. With my approach you will reach your goals. If you can dream it you can achieve it.

2. Why would I want to hire a coach?

People hire a coach to achieve important goals, to increase their professional skills, to get more out of their lives, and find ease and joy. With coaching, people move more quickly than they can on their own. The coach-client relationship sets up a momentum for that to happen. Because the coach guides the client in setting goals that work within the client's framework, the goals are more easily attainable. The client develops new skills and new awareness, which lead to greater and greater success.

3. How is coaching different from consulting?

Coaching is a form of consulting. However, a consultant typically comes to a situation to learn as much as possible and deliver answers or suggestions. A coach, on the other hand, comes to ask questions and provide information and insights that help the client find his or her own answers.

4. How is coaching different from therapy or counseling?

Coaching concentrates on the present and the future. It doesn't delve into the past. The intention is to move people forward. It's perfectly appropriate, and can be very helpful, to engage in therapy and coaching at the same time.

5. How long does a coaching relationship last?

Clients choose short-term or long-term coaching based on their needs. I recommend an initial coaching engagement of three months. Some clients achieve their desired results in that timeframe or shorter, while others find that the process is a powerful one and want to continue for longer. So the short answer to this question is, like the agenda for coaching, "It's entirely up to the client."
